Historical Background Of The Association

The Cotton Producers and Merchant Association (COPMA), is a strong commodity organization initiated and organized by the cotton stake holders in Katsina state, who engage in cotton production, processing, and marketing both domestic and international. It also covers all other cotton synergy.
Cotton is one of the major cash crop cultivated in Katsina state, it produces 60% of the total cotton production in Nigeria.
Cotton farming brings more than one million direct and indirect employments in the state. The farmers in Katsina state mostly defend on cotton farming to solve their financial problems.
COPMA is the iconic name in the state in protecting the cotton quality in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

Establishment Of The Association

The Association is established in the year 2007 as Cotton Producers and Merchant Association, the association is being established to provide a forum for all Farmers and Merchants who deal in Cotton and Allied products to interact and make more meaningful contribution to sanitize the trade and for its growth and development.
And also to promote the acquisition of requisite skills in the trade through organising of workshops, seminars, fairs, shows and exhibitions as well as provisions of farming implements and facilities, et cetera.

Registration Of The Association

The association COTTON PRODUCERS AND MERCHANT ASSOCIATION is registered as a corporate body with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in the 24th of December, 2007.

Scopes Of The Cooperative

The scopes of the cooperative are Merchants (commercial dealers), Cotton Farmers, Millers/Processors and Textiles.

Aims & Objectives Of The Association

The aims and objectives of the association are;

1. To provide a forum for all Farmers and Merchants in order to facilitate the production of quality cotton.
2. To organize a pool of identified cotton farmers for guaranteed cotton production, and also facilitate local and international market potentials.
3. To promote the acquisition of requisite skills in the trade through the organising of workshops, seminars, fairs, shows and exhibitions as well as provisions of farming implements and facilities.
4. To organize and give special training to Cotton farmers in order to boost their productivity and improve their social well-being.
5. To promote national social security by organizing, supporting and carrying out programmes and projects such as provision of improved farm inputs, micro-credit facilities and farm support services for youth engaged in or interested in Cotton farming and allied production.
6. To embark on programmes that will prohibit the adulteration of Cotton and Cotton Seed from all forms of manipulation by unscrupulous and greedy individuals in order to protect and sustain the trade.
7. To effectively monitor genuine Cotton transactions between the Producers and Merchants engaged in Cotton Trade.
8. To liaises with Government, Government Agencies, International organisations, Bodies within and outside Nigeria, Voluntary Agencies, Individuals, Corporate Bodies and other Associations in the production and supply qualitative Cotton and allied products.
9. To collaborate with other NGOs, Government Agencies, International Agencies and Organisations with similar aims and objectives as related to this Associations.

Capacities Of The Association

The capacities of the association are Merchants, Farmers, Millers and or Processors from State Level and National Levels. Provide forum for all farmers, merchants and millers who deal in Cotton and allied products.
The association had pool members of over 100,000 including farmers, merchants, ginners, millers, garment industries, textiles and all cotton dwellers in Nigeria.

Coverage Of The Association

The association covers the State and National Levels, but for now the association conducts its activities in Katsina State fully. Currently, we plan to expand our activities to the neighbouring states, like Kano State, Zamfara State, Kaduna State, Plateau State and Adamawa State in the next season.
For the wide coverage of the association activities, it covers every step of cotton value chain from production, processing and consumption.

We pave a way through strategic and technological advancement to meet the highest quality cotton in Nigeria and the world to satisfy our client desire.

Important Achievement And Milestone

As we mentioned earlier, this organization is mainly formed to sanitize and brings technological development in cotton industry, from seedling to final stage of manufacturing.

1. In 2011 the organization had participated in Federal Government Agricultural Programs in cotton seed acquisition and dispersion to farmers and fertilizer distribution through WACOT (West African Cotton Company) sponsored by Federal Ministry of Agriculture, over 10,000 farmers benefited that leads to a serious development in cotton farming, but lack of demand from domestic and international markets resulted to low turnout in the subsequent years of 2012, 2013 and 2014.
2. In the year of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the organization had participated in the Anchor Borrowers Program (ABP) in Katsina State, through state government lead window, 2,000 farmers in 2015 and 2016 then in 2017 5,090 farmers and in 2018 over 11,000 farmers had benefited under NIRSAL – CBN window which is currently in progress.
3. All these programs runs under our invigilation, and the seed distributed to the farmers where duly brought by our organization, and the yield result is favourable.
4. We have seed multiplication farm site of over 120 Hectares, invigilated by National Agricultural Seed Council of Nigeria which is currently on progress.
5. The association collaborates with Dangote Ginnery Kankara for sorting out an improved and certified cotton seed for planting known as ‘Dankankara Seed Variety which is currently planted in some of our demonstrated farms in Faskari and Sabuwa L.G.A in Funtua zone, Ingawa and Dutsi L.G.A in Northern Katsina zone, and in Batsari and Dutsinma L.G.A in Central Katsina.
6. In the current year the association have distributed an improved Dankankara cotton seed to 15,000 farmers in Katsina State.

The Biggest Achievements In Seed Multiplication Process By Copma

The Cotton Producers and Merchant Association in collaboration with Dangote Ginnery Kankara under sponsorship of Ahmed Nasidi and Sons Nigeria Limited have sorted and multiply our local cotton seed to an improve variety through modern technology and innovation, and the variety was known as Dankankara Cotton Seed. Through deep research and good inspection from 2012 to date, the yielded result is favourable from 1,200kg/hectare in 2013 season to 2,400kg/hectare in 2017 season and in the current year we are expecting more yield than the previous results.
In our second effort, our association have liaised with IAR and National Agricultural Seed Council Zaria for multiplication of foundation seed, which is currently on-going. We have over 120 hectares in trial across three geographical zones of Katsina State.

The Stand Of Cotton Producers And Merchant Association In Seed Multiplication Process

The stand of COPMA in seed multiplication process is known to cotton dwellers in the Nation, COPMA had engaged in this process to ensure quality seed provision in the market.
Being COPMA an NGO non-profit orientation organisation, dedicated all its effort to ensure good, quality, improved and certified seed are being distributed to the farmers in cheap and subsidise price, even sometimes free to the farmers. Our main aim is to boost cotton farming in the country.

Classification And Distribution Of Yield Capacity In The Three Zones Of Katsina State.

In the guinea savannah south zone of Katsina State with a 9 local governments where the rainfall period starting from April to October ending up to Six month period the yield capacity from processed cotton lint is 40% to 42% and cotton seed is from 52% to 54% where the other percentage is trashed.
In the Sahel Savannah with 15 local governments zone of Northern part of Katsina State and part of Katsina Central, where the rainfall starts from 15th May to 30th September, ranging to maximum of four month period, the yielded result of the processed cotton lint is 36% to 39% depending on the purity of the seed cotton, where cotton seed is from 53% to 56% and the other percentage is trashed.
